NATURAL REMEDIES INFLUENCE

As many as 8 million infections and about 809 hospitalizations in intensive care : these are the data released by Influnet , the bulletin of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, regarding the 2018-2019 flu season. By now we are finally out of the epidemic phase but, despite this, there are still many people who, in these days, due to the constant changes in temperature, find themselves fighting with fever , cough and sore throat .

The ' flu is a very insidious enemy comes from microorganisms that constantly tend to mutate, bacterial or viral, aided by the arrival of the cold and low temperatures. And here there is one thing to say immediately to avoid wasting unnecessary medicines: do not go hunting for antibiotics, which must be strictly prescribed only by the doctor and in conditions of real need. To understand better with an example: antibiotics are appropriate in case of bacterial infections, but absolutely useless, and therefore wasted, in case of viral infections. And using them when not needed, as in the case of the flu, exposes you to an enormous risk: they can open the doors to superbugs, which then expose you and your family to some pathologies no longer curable with the medicines available today, in how resistant to therapies.

But now let's see how flu is treated without the unnecessary abuse of antibiotics and medicines, starting with its most significant symptoms . And knowing that the transmission of influenza occurs through small drops of mucus and saliva, usually by air, and with an incubation period that varies between 18 and 72 hours. During this time you can infect other people, even with a simple contact. On the contrary, the flu disorder resolves itself in two, maximum five days, absolutely spontaneously.

First of all, the first advice, especially valid in spring, is to dress in layers and always carry a sweater or jacket with you to use in case of need. Sometimes, during the day, it also happens to go to different places where there is air conditioning, so, to avoid a cold, it is always advisable to keep a scarf or a scarf on hand, in order to cover up depending on the temperature.

FLU SYMPTOMS

Throbbing head, sore muscles, burning forehead. There is no doubt: you have caught the flu , which looks like a seasonal disease with many heads (the main types of its virus are three: A, B and C) and it can evolve in a thousand ways. Therefore, the fundamental thing to cure the flu is to let it vent, but containing it to the first band of manifestations, without it evolving with more serious problems. And this can be done with the most classic and ancient natural remedies , without compulsively overdoing drugs, wasting money and health.

Colds and flu are very similar, but in reality they are caused by very different microorganisms, and therefore can have very different evolutions: in general, a cold lasts longer, but it is the flu that makes you feel worse. Its basic symptoms, fever , headache and joint pain (which in the case of colds are rare or very mild), allow you to recognize the flu from the first moment. Add in the tiredness , sore throat and cough that can accompany the flu.

HOW THE FLU IS TREATED

The most important natural remedies to stop the flu and defeat it, before it gets worse, are all linked to lifestyles, to some attention both in terms of activity and in terms of nutrition. Simple things, in short, but of extraordinary effectiveness.

  • To stay at home. It may seem trivial, but it is a fundamental rule that is often underestimated: you feel not particularly weak, without fever and you have a commitment. Just enough to get out, and risk getting ruined. When the flu arrives, however, you have to support the body and help it fight the disease, because the body concentrates all its energies on the immune response. Therefore, it is important to stay warm, and also do not forget that the flu is a very infectious disease.
  • Take lots of fluids. The flu, especially if accompanied by fever, dehydrates and therefore it is important to drink a lot already in the first phase. Water, herbal teas, fruit juices, centrifuged , liquid and light soups that hydrate the tissues and facilitate the elimination of mucus, lowering inflammation. Avoid fizzy drinks instead, as bubbles can swell your stomach and make you nauseous.
  • Foods to avoid and foods to take. In general, with the flu you have to be particularly careful to eat little and well. Even when you have a lot of appetite. Avoid heavy foods: red meat, dairy products (they contain substances that favor the production of mucus and therefore increase phlegm), pasta with a very elaborate and fatty recipe. Instead, choose boiled rice, fresh cheese, white pasta, cream of cereals, baked potatoes , toast. And for fruit cooked apples and bananas. In particular, the banana can also be transformed into a pleasant dessert: when it is very ripe, you peel it and blend it. Another useful and tasty smoothie is with coffee (one cup), banana (always ripe, vegetable milk and cinnamon.
  • Go on with the ginger. Ginger is the classic "grandmother's remedy", which helps soothe a sore throat, keeps fever under control, relieves joint pain and cleans the airways of excess mucus. Excellent herbal tea or the use of ginger in the preparation of food.
  • The vitamins you need . Vitamin A has a fundamental function on the immune level, and you can find it in dark leafy vegetables, such as kale and spinach, and in yellow-orange ones, such as carrots and squash. Vitamin C is essential when you are in a state of general cooling, because it produces antibodies and interferon, which helps to resist viral infections. Vitamin C is also a metabolic regulator that activates numerous enzymes and protects against the deficiency of other vitamins, such as A, B1, B2, D, E, K. You can find it in citrus fruits, berries, sour fruit, broccoli , in parsley, in black currants, peppers, tomatoes, berries, potatoes (which must be cooked with the peel to preserve the vitamin C inside), rose hips (which must not be infused, because the vitamin C is destroyed with high temperatures and dispersed as a volatile substance through vapor). Foods of animal origin, on the other hand, are very low in vitamin C. Curiosity for new mothers: mother's milk contains more vitamin C than cow's milk.
  • The honey elixir and gargling. Sweeten your herbal teas with honey, because it is an excellent anti mucolytic and softens the throat. An excellent solution, in case of a sore or irritated throat, are gargling with (warm) salted water, which can free you from phlegm: you can also put a basil leaf in it. Another ancient remedy is gargle with 2 squeezed lemons, water and salt.
  • The role of zinc. Zinc helps restore the function of the immune system. When this is missing, you are more exposed to infections and viruses. It is found in whole grains, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, legumes and soy. Zinc is also present in almonds, nutritious and energetic, very useful in the transition to the autumn season and in seasonal respiratory disorders. Zinc is also useful to counteract physical and intellectual fatigue, typical consequences of the flu and colds. You can also find zinc in beetroot which has a stimulating effect for the organism in general and for the immune system, an effect due to betanin which gives the juice its red color.
  • Suffumigi and foot bath. Make eucalyptus fumigations, as the grandmothers advised, a very effective remedy against the flu. Just boil some water and add eucalyptus essential oil to it. Then place a towel on your head and breathe in the vapors that come out of the container. Use hot water to take a soothing foot bath that relieves headaches, reduces the flu and relieves the sensation of a stuffy nose.
  • Something sweet. Even sucking on a candy or lozenge can lubricate your throat and help you get better. Always keep some balsamic, herbal or honey candies on hand, which will help keep your throat soft and moist.
  • Super garlic. Garlic is a powerful disinfectant for the nose and throat. Crush a clove, mix it with hot milk and a few tablespoons of honey.

PACKS TO TREAT THE FLU

The most effective compress for treating the flu when the fever is not really high is with water and vinegar . The procedure is really simple and has no contraindications. Dip a cloth into a bowl of hot water mixed with a cup of vinegar. Then squeeze it and place it on the forehead, wrists and crooks of the elbows. You will have immediate relief, in the most natural way possible.

THE HEN BROTH AGAINST THE FLU

It is an ancient grandmother's or great-grandmother's remedy, which is now also accredited by many international studies: chicken broth . It has functions of both prevention and treatment of the flu. It is easily digested while stimulating the immune system, helping to thin the mucus and rebuild cells damaged by infection. But how do you make chicken broth? Immerse the meat in cold water, complete with the skin, and then boil it for about an hour and a half. You will have a precious dish for your ailment, and you can make it tastier with a leek, a few cloves, a carrot, a stick of celery and just a touch of pepper.

HOW TO TREAT THE FLU WITH HERBS

There are several herbs that can be taken without contraindications, in case of flu, and to obtain good healing results. Let's see the most important.

  • Rosa canina. Take rosehip rosehip, which is rich in vitamins C, A and K and immunomodulating, excellent as a preventive system even in children, to be taken when the first symptoms appear and even later, to prevent relapses.
  • The Astragalus. Astragalus is a plant that the ancients, in Europe and Asia, used a lot to defend the immune system, because it has an antiviral action.
  • The Uncaria. Uncaria molecules strengthen the immune system and are useful in the prevention of colds, especially of the upper respiratory tract.
  • The Erisimo. It is also called the singers' herb , due to its qualities that point directly to the respiratory tract. It is taken in case of airway problems, and relieves sore throats and hoarseness.
  • Echinacea.   It enhances the natural defensive response of the immune system and prevents the infection from getting complicated by blocking the reproduction of the virus. It should be taken in the preventive phase and at the first annoyances.
  • The Hornbeam. Take the Hornbeam bud extract when colds and flu accompany cough and also in the preventive phase to avoid relapses.
  • The Propolis. The hydroalcoholic extract of Propolis is a natural antibiotic, effective against bacteria, viruses and fungi. Inside there are active ingredients such as flavonoids and flavones that strengthen the immune system.
  • The Horehound. The mother tincture of Horehound, an antiseptic, mucolytic, expectorant and toxifuge plant, thins the mucus and catarrhs, favoring expectoration; relieves inflammation of the bronchial mucous membranes caused by infectious or irritative phenomena.

DRINK FOR FLU

We suggest two, one for adults and one for children.

  • Drinker for adults. Prepare an anti-flu drink for adults by boiling 1 cinnamon stick and 2 tablespoons of cloves in half a liter of water for about ten minutes . After boiling, turn off and add 1 chilli pepper. Let it rest for 10 minutes and then, after filtering, drink the liquid.
  • Drinker for children. For children, on the other hand, boil 1 teaspoon of elderberry, 1 teaspoon of cloves and 1 stick of cinnamon for ten minutes in half a liter of water. Let it sit for 10 minutes and then, after filtering, administer it.

MEDICINES AGAINST INFLUENZA

If you walk into any pharmacy, you will have the feeling that there are tons of pills capable of working wonders against the flu. It is not so. In fact, these drugs are often a waste of money, even with some health risk.

  • Never antibiotics. Many do it, and it's really a useless and stupid thing: taking antibiotics in case of flu. It is a gesture that does not take into account the roots of the disease. The flu is a viral infection and antibiotics don't kill its viruses: if you take them, you are punching your body, and you are wasting money.
  • Medicines based on antihistamines.  They can dry out a runny nose, and give you the feeling of being healed. Deadly mistake. As this type of medication induces you to calmly resume your activity, risking relapses or more serious complications.
  • Pain relievers. Aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen can relieve fever, headache and bone pain. Nothing more. If you really want to use these pills, do it in the evening hours.
  • No baby aspirin. Several researches show that aspirin, when children are very young, can have neurological contraindications. If you decide to give your children acetaminophen, do so only following your doctor's instructions.
  • The best pill? Fresh air. Raising the humidity level in the bedroom helps reduce the discomfort of coughing, a sore throat, and a too dry nose. Like the fresh air that must never be missing in your bedroom, even when you're stuck in the house with the flu. Obviously avoiding currents, and always remaining well covered by pajamas and nightgown.
