Suffumigi: an ancient remedy to combat seasonal ailments
From chamomile to tea tree oil, an ancient natural remedy,
perfect for fighting colds, coughs and sinusitis without immediately resorting
to drugs
HOW TO MAKE SUFFUMIGI
The fumigations , also called " fumenti ",
are among the most recommended remedies to combat the
classic seasonal ailments , such as phlegm , cough and sinusitis . The
ancient Romans already made use of this technique which bases its effectiveness
on the use of water vapor and herbs . The water vapor,
in fact, combined with the action of essential oils and herbs, is able to free
the upper respiratory tract in a natural and rapid way, greatly
relieving sore throats and colds. The fumigations have a
decongestant, disinfectant and emollient action.
WHAT ARE SUFFUMIGI
The technique is really very simple and is the one handed
down by grandmothers and our mothers. In a saucepan, boil some water and
then add essential oils and bicarbonate : the latter makes
the water effervescent and amplifies the effectiveness of the oils. Then,
take the pot, put it on a surface and start breathing the steam that comes out,
not before putting a cloth on your head to prevent the heat from
dispersing. The latter, in fact, must be inhaled deeply so that it is able
to clear the respiratory tract and give you the desired relief.
HOW TO MAKE SUFFUMIGI WITH BICARBONATE
Practice the inhalations for about 2/3 minutes in a row and
repeat them three times within a few seconds of each other. You can carry
out your fumigations several times during the day, especially in the evening,
before going to bed, please rest at night . Besides being very
useful against seasonal ailments, the fumigations are also very beneficial for
the skin, because they dilate the pores and prepare it for a scrub treatment or
a mask.
SUFFUMIGI WITH CHAMOMILE
To free the respiratory tract and ears of persistent phlegm
and mucus, try chamomile fumigations. Get yourself a sachet of chamomile (or
dried flowers) and put it in a pot of boiling water. Also add a teaspoon
of baking soda which has a strong disinfecting power. Then inhale the
steam, covering your head with a towel or cloth as usual.
SMOKE WITH LAUREL
If you suffer from sinusitis or joint pain, laurel is for
you because it has antispasmodic, analgesic and calming properties for bone
pain and greatly soothes headaches, often linked to sinusitis. The ancient
Romans already used it for their tools and for compresses against pains.
SUFFUME WITH TEA TREE OIL
When you are afflicted with the flu or a cold, tea
tree oil is a real cure-all. Add 5 drops of this oil to your boiling water
and then breathe in the water vapor intensely: you will get immediate
relief. Tea tree oil also calms coughs. Do your clothes in the
evening and you will sleep without coughing.
SUFFUMIGI WITH EUCALYPTUS
Eucalyptus (or cypress oil) is a
good decongestant , able to clear the respiratory tract and soothe
sore throats and coughs. Dissolve 5 drops in boiling water, as usual, and
you will immediately breathe better, especially before going to bed.
SMOKE WITH OIL 31
Oil 31 is obtained from 31 natural essences and effectively
fights colds. You can put 3 drops in a liter of water which you will then
boil. Then breathe in the steam, full of all the balsamic properties that
will ease the cooling.
SMOKE WITH MINT
For nose and sore throat do the fumigations with mint, which
is a vasodilator, helps you breathe better and decongests the nasal mucosa.
SMOKE WITH LAVENDER
Lavender essential oil is excellent against
sore throat and sinusitis as it has decongestant
and antibacterial effects : it calms and soothes
irritations of the oral cavity. Dilute 2 or 3 drops of lavender and rosemary
essential oil in a liter of boiling water to relieve sinus headaches.
SMOKE WITH COARSE SALT
For fumigations you can also use an ingredient that you
surely have at home: coarse salt . Boil a liter of water
and then pour a tablespoon of salt into the pot. Finally, breathe in the
steam released.
SMOKE WITH CINNAMON
Cinnamon is excellent against colds, especially when paired
with cloves , baking soda and lemon. Boil a liter of water and
then put in 1 stick of crumbled cinnamon, 5 cloves, 1 tablespoon of baking soda
and the zest of half a lemon cut into small pieces. Remove from the heat
and let it rest for a few minutes. Then bring your head, covered with a
cloth, and inhale the steam. Repeat the inhalation for about 5 times.
CONTRAINDICATIONS OF SUFFUMIGI
For being very valid, fumigations are not suitable
for asthma sufferers , because they could be allergic to
essential oils. Furthermore, prolonged use of water vapor could cause
severe irritation of the respiratory tract in these subjects. In such
cases, it is always advisable to consult your doctor before carrying out the
surgery.
